Hammer Hire is Joining Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea This May

This May, we’re putting down the tools for a morning and putting on the kettle.

The HammerHire team is hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of Cancer Council Australia. It’s something we genuinely look forward to every year. Cancer has touched people in our team, people in our network, and customers we’ve worked alongside over the years. This is our small way of doing something about it.

What is Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea?

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is Cancer Council Australia’s annual fundraising event held throughout May and June. The idea couldn’t be simpler — host a morning tea, invite people along, and raise money that goes towards cancer research, prevention, and support services for Australians going through treatment.

Last year, morning teas across the country raised over $15.6 million. Over its 33-year history, more than 500,000 hosts have taken part. Every dollar raised stays in Australia and goes to work that genuinely matters.

Why this cause matters to our industry

Cancer touches everyone eventually. But there’s something specific worth saying about the construction and civil industry.

Tradies are among the most exposed to workplace carcinogens in Australia — diesel exhaust, silica dust, years of sun on site, and asbestos in older buildings are all part of the job for a lot of people. Cancer Council estimates that around 6.5 per cent of new cancer diagnoses in Australia each year are linked to workplace risk factors. Almost six in ten tradies report knowing a colleague who has had skin cancer.

It’s not something people in this industry talk about much. But it’s there. And it’s one of the reasons we wanted to be part of something like this.
